I see it’s time to clear things up again:
1. No one “literally works for the ACA”. The ACA is a healthcare law, not a corporation or even a government agency.
2. I don’t work for HHS, CMS, or any other government agency.
3. I‘m not employed by any private corporation either.

4. I pay the bills primarily thanks to a combination of individual small donors, banner ads and occasional freelance writing gigs or phone consults. I’ve never taken money from a for-profit health insurance carrier.
5. Oh, and I still run a small web design business with my wife.
I think thats it.

Pretty much in a nutshell.
One more time: the 155M on the right side are covered through their employers. They’re the ones most likely to object to being forced off their current plans. For them, it’d be optional.
For everyone else it’d be phased in gradually, quickly enough to achieve universal coverage within a few years, slowly enough not to cause a massive backlash. Plus, all newborns would be autoenrolled, which few would object to since they don’t currently HAVE an existing policy.

⚠️ THREAD: When the dust settles on the 2019 Open Enrollment Period, total enrollments will likely be ~11.4M on exchange, plus perhaps 3M off-exchange. Of the 14.4M total, around 13M (90%) will actually pay their premiums. 1/
Of those 13M people, around 4.2 million will be unsubsidized & have to pay full price...and that full price will average around $49/month higher in 2019 than it would have been if Trump & the GOP hadn't repealed the individual mandate & opened the floodgates on #ShortAssPlans. 2/
This is the case even in states where 2019 premiums are *dropping* in 2019 (or staying flat)...they would have gone down *even more* without those changes. Many of the carriers have stated this specifically in rate filings, w/many including actuarial data to support it. 3/

🚨 Holy Smokes.
Let me repeat that: 4.2 MILLION currently uninsured Americans could get #ACA-compliant healthcare policies FOR FREE.

(yes, they'd have high deductibles, but they'd include FREE preventative services, such as, blood/drug screenings, mammograms, vaccinations, etc)

Yes same here. I used to rent a seed box but gave it up as legal services had everything I wanted. As availability has retreated and market fractured, it’s increasingly attractive to pick it up again. Need to literally preserve culture that is not legally available anymore.
It’s interesting to contemplate a potential future where if a publicly-published work is unavailable for 15 years the entire thing becomes free-to-copy as a whole. But like mattress stickers, you have to include the entire thing and can’t cut it up to use licensed works in it.
That way licensees and work owners are either forced to make a deal and share the profits, or too bad its free now.

Another difference #ACA makes!

2010-12: With my Cobra ending, in GA I stay covered via obscure HIPPA protections. My only choice: Celtic Insurance owned by Centene Corp. For my Humira drug, Celtic makes me pay tens thousands up front as pay first & manually snail mail claims 1/
To make matters worse, this insurance takes up to 9 months to reimburse me as I float tens of thousands dollars via savings or credit cards. Other times, insurance says submit my bills (as claims) from CVS Specialty Pharmacy instead, but then CVS hounds me for unpaid bills! 2/
While all this is happening, insurance has no transparency in their online portal or snail mail of the processing, status, or even the existence of my claims! I'm completely in the dark, I have to call & call & call this insurance's customer service representatives for info 3/

Nine years since it's passage, many Americans remain confused about #ACA, also known as #Obamacare.

The ACA is NOT insurance. It is a law mandating insurance company provisions. It covers EVERY American who has health insurance of any kind, individually or via their employer.
The #ACA requires all insurance providers cover #PreExistingConditions; requires women be covered for all services and not be charged more than men; that all insurers provide low-cost policies so that everyone have access to a plan.

This is what #ACA does.
It is NOT insurance.
The Obama administration set up healthcare.gov, with insurance navigators to help people choose the best and most affordable plans through health insurers in their areas.

The government also offers tax credit subsidies for health insurance based on income.

I have no excuse not to advocate. So as the season's first snow fell, my friend and patient advocate Peter @morethanmySLE and I hit the halls of the US Senate.

Peter suffers from chronic illnesses. The #ACA saved his life, so now he takes peoples' stories to their senators.
There is a rule being proposed called the "public charge rule." It vastly expands the types of public benefits that an immigrant seeking a green card is barred from - to the point that it becomes a public health issue.

Here's the rule - all 400+ pages:

Because an immigrant mother with a breast pump paid for by WIC for her US citizen baby will fear that our government will deport her. So, her baby suffers.

This rule will be particularly harsh on pregnant and breastfeeding women, and children.

1. I am disappointed in Lisa Murkowski .@lisamurkowski. You argue that you are ok with repeal of the #ACA mandate because it limits freedom of choice. Does it? I have been driving for 30 years and never had an accident (knocking wood). Do I have a choice to have auto insurance?
2. According to state law, no - but, technically, yes. I could choose to take the risk. Risk paying the tickets and fines. Risk an accident. I can pay 'out of pocket'. And if I can't, well...they have uninsured motorist insurance, right?
3. But, doesn't that make everyone's premiums go up? Sure, but that's not really my concern if I'm not paying for insurance anyway. Remember, I'm a good & lucky driver. Why doesn't the government let me decide the risks I'm willing to take? Because accidents happen all the time.
