1. I am disappointed in Lisa Murkowski .@lisamurkowski. You argue that you are ok with repeal of the #ACA mandate because it limits freedom of choice. Does it? I have been driving for 30 years and never had an accident (knocking wood). Do I have a choice to have auto insurance?
2. According to state law, no - but, technically, yes. I could choose to take the risk. Risk paying the tickets and fines. Risk an accident. I can pay 'out of pocket'. And if I can't, well...they have uninsured motorist insurance, right?
3. But, doesn't that make everyone's premiums go up? Sure, but that's not really my concern if I'm not paying for insurance anyway. Remember, I'm a good & lucky driver. Why doesn't the government let me decide the risks I'm willing to take? Because accidents happen all the time.
4. Likewise, things happen to 'healthy' people all the time. Breaks, sprains, strep, influenza, pneumonia, pregnancy, etc. What if they can't pay 'out of pocket'? If they qualify, they can get Medicaid. But you're Tax Bill cuts that by $32M in Alaska.
5. If they don't qualify for #Medicaid and still can't pay that cost is absorbed and raises healthcare costs overall. Not to mention, increased load on ER's and urgent care and a general lack of preventative care that increases risk factors and costs as people age.
6. In all honesty, the 'fine' paid by people without health insurance is way less that the financial drain they actually cause in the healthcare system. With auto insurance, the penalties are steeper (no insurance, no license), but essentially exist for the same reason.
7. Give me one argument why people shouldn't pay back into the system with a penalty tax if they are taking risks that inflate the costs for everyone else? Explain to me how this 'freedom of choice' extends to health insurance but not auto insurance.
