2/ First thing you should introspect is *why* you read. Do you read because of FOMO? While reading, do you worry about forgetting?

For me, the point of reading books is to not remember the facts but to form useful mental models that I can deploy in my future thinking.
3/ Clarity on your reason for reading will help you guide on how to get most out of the time you invest in reading.

1/ A thread on the strangeness of giving advice.
2/ First of all, let's get this right off the bat: the advice giver accrues MORE benefit from giving advice than the one who's receiving it.
3/ When we give advice, our half-formed thoughts crystallize and tell us clearly and reinforce what we believe in.

The receiver, on the other hand, has the tough job of figuring out what we mean and then making changes to his/her life based on the few bits of info we give out.

Objective #art is possible only when somebody has attained to a higher plane of being; it is created by those who have reached the peak. They can see the peak and they can see the valley both. They can see the height, the beauty, the sickness and the ugliness of #humanity.
They can see deep down in the dark valleys. They can manage to create some devices which will help the people who are crawling in the darkness to reach the sunlit peaks. Their art will be just a device for your inner #growth, for #maturity.
Picasso’s pictures are subjective art. Seeing a painting by Picasso … he has not considered you, who are going to see the painting. You are not taken into account at all. He has simply vomited his own madness on the canvas. It is simply a vomit.

Neural approaches to style transfer struggle with certain types of art, e.g. crisp yet smooth brush-strokes 🖋️. It's likely a combination of factors, including using models pre-trained on natural images. 📷

Ah. Here's what happens visually when the optimization algorithm (L-BFGS) "explodes" 💥. I have not tracked down the cause yet, likely extending #PyTorch to understand parameter ranges would help.

(Left: previous iteration looks OK, Right: pixels go far out of range → clamped)
Example outputs of the Picasso drawing with more bias towards upper layers of the convnet (4x), then equalized, then bias towards lower layers (4x).

Interesting, but nothing like the original. Some insights forming!

2/We've had fake images and CGI for years, so what's different now (beyond enabling us to transplant Nicolas Cage's face to other people). The ease of making #deepfakes is captured by the vlogger Tom Scott
3/ = Barriers to entry to manipulate audio and video are falling - costs less, needs less tech expertise, uses open-source code + cloud computing power. Plus, sophistication of manipulation of social media spaces by bad actors makes it easier to weaponize and to micro-target.

As a disclaimer I certainly don’t always stand by everything I wrote years or even a decade ago; opinions change and I may also have written something differently than I do now. In various ways I’ve changed over the years though I’m still happy with most what I’ve published.
