It was the Y2K bug.
The things that have been real threats: Tunguska, WW1, the Spanish flu, Pearl Harbor, the invention of nuclear weapons, the invasion of Korea, 9/11, the Indian ocean tsunami -- have been real surprises. Chances are that we don't see the big one coming.
The real challenge is to prepare against the unexpected. The ancients created granaries. Generals establish reserves. Households prepare savings. Ideologues go into debt to head off the predicted threat.

Did Maduro have much choice? But now that he's wholly-owned by the company store he loses degrees of freedom. That opens him to being turned into a mere pawn in any negotiations with Russia, liable to be sold down the river at any time.
There's nothing Putin can get out of Maduro he couldn't get better from some competent replacement. If Putin wants his money back and Venezuela's oil online is Maduro really the man to do it?

When the Left began to anchor legitimacy on their own virtue the collapse was inevitable. Previous generations who axiomatically knew "that all men are sinners" understood that legitimacy had to be based on justice, external fact and natural law. All else would break.
This acknowledgement of external reality and a moral authority ruling even kings characterized Western civilization. But the totalitarianisms of the 20th century brooked no superior to the Party, but the Party proved as sinful as the masses, nay, more sinful.
They replaced the external God, if one allows the term, with the god-men of celebritihood. We haven't stopped laughing since.

North Sentinel Island is a tiny little island in the Bay of Bengal, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory of India. The population is mainly entirely Native tribes and has lived on these islands for thousands if not tens of thousands of years and extremely unique.
The Andamanese and (Sentinalese people as part of them) are so distinct that their language, culture and genetically, that when they were first met, not only could no one figure out their language or connect their culture to other cultures, thousands of them died of disease.

OK, so I guess I have to say something about my earlier tweet about the president and #nuclear weapons. I do not mean that I think the president will use nuclear weapons while he’s in the middle of rage tweeting. (As always, this is my personal view.) /1
Rather, I think it is important to remind the Trump supporters, constantly, that they elected someone whose job includes more than just triggering the libs. If Hillary or Obama were talking this way, Trump fans would have argued for committing them involuntarily. /2
I especially want Trump voters and GOP congressman to keep in their minds — again, constantly — that this president, like any POTUS, could be placed under immense emotional stress in a crisis at some point that *might not be about him* and on which our survival might depend. /3
