Here is the PM talking to N Ireland business community - some of whom had gone out on a limb to support her backstop

PM: absolute commitment to principles of the Belfast Agreement has informed my approach to Brexit...
PM to business leaders from NI: “I know it wasn’t easy [to back the backstop]” - a ref to the attacks from some politicians on some business leaders who supported PMs original plan.
PM: I understand what a hard border would mean... while technology can play a part and we will look at alternative arrangements these must work
PM again floats idea of joint World Cup bid UK-Ireland 2030.. calls it “tantalising”...

No idea how it is proposed to pass the fully amendable Withdrawal Agreement Bill in 17 days post Mar 12 - this is actual legal instrument of ratification.

It’s all amendable - detail of £39bn+ bill, transition application of EU law, etc etc

Lords, ping pong etc etc
also some big statutory instruments some require a 28 day process and are yet to be laid...

The Big One:

Tariff schedules...

Massive decisions creating winners and losers between consumers and producers, and between different industry sectors - as yet not debated in Commons
decisions on tariffs are extremely important for businesses obviously..

Been discussed in a small Cabinet subcommittee

But massive potential localised implications depending on who is deemed to be priority.

Ceramics industry? Welsh hill farmers? Shoppers buying fresh produce?

Ahead of @theresa_may’s latest visit to Brussels, where are we with #Brexit?!

A not-so-short thread which I hope simplifies a seemingly never-ending process but one which could have an abrupt end in less than 40 days. /1
Some context first: The key problem is the backstop - the Irish Protocol to us its proper name

It’s a section of the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) - a 585-page legal text which, together with a shorter Political Declaration (PD), forms the divorce treaty between UK & the EU. /2
The two texts - the WA & the PD - were the consequence of nearly two years of negotiations.

They were finalised + agreed by both the UK government (@10DowningStreet) and the EU (@EU_Commission) late last year. /3

Ignore the claim there are 6 key issues.

All that is worth looking at is what she says she will not do;
what she says she will do;
+ what she says might do.

TL;DR: There is no Plan B.

What she won’t do:
Revoke Art. 50 (that’s just rude);
Extend Art.50 (so No Deal remains live);
Call a 2nd referendum (she doubts it’ll win)*

* Though she doesn't completely rule out the possibility of Parliament bringing this forward.

What she might do post-Brexit:
Take lessons from her mistakes in these negotiations when it comes to negotiating the future relationship.
She’ll be more inclusive: ‘engaging’ with elected reps from NI (and [randomly] English regions), & businesses & other normal people.

Today UK govt published its unilateral 'commitments to Northern Ireland & its integral place in the UK'.
I'd read it not just as an effort to get unionists on board #WithdrawalAgmt but a nod towards post-Brexit governance.

I really hope that isn’t a coincidence.
& if it isn't, it's a pointed reminder to those who claim to be concerned abt the representation of NI that they cd put more effort into getting Stormont up & running.

The DUP came out quickly to reject it, underwhelmed & unconvinced.
Others will be too, but we cdn’t expect detail or substance on commitments at this stage.
(Besides, perhaps it's a duty of politicians in NI to bring forward proposals re: enhancing representation of NI..?)

Interesting polling covering GB, NI & IRL. More evidence of layering of Leave/Remain differences upon existing polarisation within NI.
This is why zero-sum (ie land v. sea #border) #brexit narratives (& poss. outcomes) pose direct risks to peace & the Agmt lordashcroftpolls.com/2018/06/brexit…
I can't help but say, tho, that the phrasing of some of the Qs asked is unfortunate, e.g. on possible 'different status' of NI (ref. customs checks in sea ports) or a hard border risking paramilitary attacks.
This serves to *perpetuate* distortions of sensitive & nuanced matters.
+ as for the statement (for respondents to agree/disagree with) on technological solutions --
"Modern technology would allow any customs checks to be done quickly and easily, so a border would not be damaging or disruptive" --
What purpose/value does this have in an opinion poll?

Recap of debate in House of Lords y'day on Amendment 25 re: Irish #border in EU Withdrawal Bill #Brexit
HoL had tabled an amendment specifying no checks & controls of any sort. Pared-back version offered by govt in compromise was passed.

Lord Duncan said govt accepted thrust of amendment but made 3 changes to ensure it's 'fit for the statute book':
- to reflect fact W'drawal Agmt =btn UK & EU not IRL
- to refer to '98 NI Act re: N/S cooperation
- tighten wording (but said still inc. range of checks/controls)

5 Lords spoke. Lord Cormack welcomed ‘real meeting of minds’ in this instance. Lord Murphy reported from BIIPA ‘unanimous agmt that Brexit is dominating British-Irish rels’
& noted ‘there is no political voice from NI in the negotiations dealing with these important issues.’
