The real problem is when you say you grew up around racists, end up as an adult with racist thoughts in your head and still say “I’M not racist.”

Racism is normative in Western society. It’s in the air we breathe. If you deny it, you’re not fighting it.

Northam’s thinking his blackface (or Klan?) photo was OK to ignore for 30 years, then absurdly deny by saying it was the *wrong* blackface photo, exists on the same continuum as Neeson blurting his desire to revenge-lynch random black men: “I do racist things but I’m not racist.”
White people and Asians/other light skinned people of color who don’t acknowledge and confront the reality of systemic racism against blacks—and how we benefit from it in ways small and big—are more at fault for perpetuating that system than actual violent racists.
Everyone can condemn the latter as an “exception” to our civilized society’s rule of law, breathe a sigh of relief that WE aren’t to blame—WE’RE not racist—and ignore that we inhale and exhale and derive nourishment from racism, particularly anti-black racism, all day every day.
