White people and Asians/other light skinned people of color who don’t acknowledge and confront the reality of systemic racism against blacks—and how we benefit from it in ways small and big—are more at fault for perpetuating that system than actual violent racists.

I want to address this once and for all: Asians make up most of the cast and writers room. THEY KNOW. This has been debated by the production FOREVER—they even put jokes about it in the show (“wide ass feet”).

But here’s the reality: Name a show whose cast walks around in socks?
You won’t see it. It’s unsafe because all kinds of sharp things are scattered around sets. And yes, slippers ARE an option (and seen some episodes, especially around bedtime) but the act of taking off shoes/putting on slippers is distracting and adds “business” that kills rhythm.
The economy and tightness of 21 min shows are such that even entering/leaving the house has to be “on a beat.” The show chooses timing over authenticity here. A movie might not, though I can’t think of any Asian American movies that show people swapping shoes for slippers either.

1. We ought not get caught up with the red herring of “identity politics.” At its core, identity politics involve questions/concerns about justice. Talk of equal pay for women is a justice issue. Talk of equal treatment under the law for black people is a justice issue.
2. The irony, of course, is that political appeals to white, blue collar workers or white evangelical Christians or white rural America aren’t seen as forms of “identity politics”. Those appeals are read as claims about the so-called common good.
3. The complaints of white working America aren’t read as wallowing in victimhood. This fact speaks volumes about who is valued more in this country and how that fact shapes policy.
