PEOPLE OF AMERICA! Tonight I am attending the #SOTU in the People’s House as a proud American citizen...and today I am sharing a few things I’ve seen over the last year traveling the country and world with @WCKitchen - my own thoughts on the #stateoftheunion (thread)
In California, where wildfires burned up and down the state, we met true superheroes - firefighters, search-and-rescue, National Guard - who showed incredible bravery and humanity, working to save others even as their own homes were threatened by flame.
In North Carolina after Hurricane Florence, we served alongside members of the Lumbee Tribe as they worked to rebuild their community and their lives with such positivity, not letting the rains dampen their spirits
We saw Floridians rise up and work together after the absolute destruction of Hurricane Michael, neighbors working together to support each other on the long road to recovery, to give each other hope for the future
In Guatemala and Indonesia, we witnessed the power of foreign aid for people around the world, as American volunteers worked alongside local organizations to rebuild in the wake of terrible disasters...working together globally builds a stronger future for everyone, everywhere
In Tijuana, we met people seeking nothing more than a better future for their families, and we saw that common sense solutions to immigration will lead to safer, stronger communities at home and abroad. Longer tables, not higher walls!
In DC and across America, the volunteers of #ChefsForFeds, and more than ever incredible WOMEN, served food and hope to federal employees and contractors affected by the shutdown…and showed us what the people of this country are capable of even when our government is divided
…and to where it all started, in Puerto Rico, where #ChefsForPuertoRico served almost 4 million meals after Hurricane Maria, we have been working to support the local food economy, seizing the opportunity to build farmers’ resilience and the island’s long term self-reliance
Over the last year, we’ve seen Americans helping Americans, people from every diverse background you can imagine, bipartisan and nonpartisan, public and private, coming up with smart, common sense solutions to feed and support the citizens of our great nation in times of need
From the East Coast to the West Coast, from the border to the nation’s capital, we are all stronger when we work together for a better future for ourselves, for our children, for all Americans and all citizens of the World.
People of America...if there is one thing that I have seen with @WCKitchen in the past year, over and over and over again, it is that the future of America is bright, and the State of our Union is STRONG!
