On the Obama nostalgia: You don't have to romanticize what came before to recognize the severity of our situation. We've gone from being an oppressive, contemptible world power to an oppressive, contemptible three-ring circus with nukes.
The knee-jerk patriotism, wanting to remove Trump's violence from what it means to be American, is unhelpful, to put it mildly. Trump is an amplified version of everything that's fucked up about the US. His ideas are not original. Pretending otherwise helps no one.
The romanticization of pre-Trump politics in the US is ahistorical and disregards the suffering of countless people, but it's also bad strategy. You don't root out a problem by denying how you got there.
When we have liberals valorizing intelligence agencies and acting as tho the same old neoliberal celeb politicians will save us, the future is not looking bright. Removing Trump is a top priority for me, but it will not save us. It's crucial that we have no illusions about that.
Now, we are seeing this anti-Trump brand of patriotism propelling us toward a new Cold War era, with people branding folks as Russian trolls and agents with abandon. People who condemn the historic evils McCarthyism are now zealously reinventing it for our times.
Simply discussing an establishment candidate's record now draws accusations that a person is in Putin's pocket. This is dangerous and despicable, and if you simply let it be, bc the accusers are on your side politically, you're just as guilty.
And believe me, y'all who are sitting still for that shit, for the sake of expediency, are SEEN.
So many people are talking about unity while branding anyone who questions them a Russian bot or agent and it's just too gross for words. I can't even express how ashamed some of y'all should be.
As nuclear treaties collapse, one by one, this obsession with Russia -- as tho they really tipped the scales of the election, bc that spares Dems any self examination -- and the idea that all dissenters are Russian agents is so destructive. Reality needs to be checked in w here.
A lot of ppl who don't normally wade into w electoral politics are ready to get active, bc a lot of folks who thought they couldn't trust the government any less are more afraid now. But look at the environment they're stepping into. Who tf would want any part of this shit?
And fuck the BS talk about how people shouldn't have to be "asked nicely." Anybody who knows anything about mobilization knows you're *supposed to* communicate with ppl effectively and persuasively. It's about dialogue and relationship building, not entitlement.
We have to be willing to interrogate what got us here, bc if you're just romanticizing the road to Trumpism, the people who suffered on that road are never going to take you seriously.
