the term 'radical' always comes across as some image of screaming masked anarchists leveling the white house with clubs and building a commune on its ashes but radicalism at this point is "new laws. any."
as far as most liberals are concerned we have enough laws, perhaps too many, that actually have an effect. everything i can recall being propsed by the democrats, with a few exceptions, was basically a wrist-slap. they won't fucking OUTLAW anything.
this is in keeping with the perception that the 90s were the "end of history." this is how everyone felt and nobody questioned it. huh?? outlaw?? excuse me, CIVILIZED people don't have to BAN things
no, sorry, if you want guns to go away you might need to OUTLAW THEM. everyone screams in horror! like we haven't outlawed tons of shit! but all those laws were made in past decades or only target poor people (drugs, cars that don't pass emissions, etc)
if you want to save the planet you might need to ban the use of: oil. everyone screams! except we were were barely fucking USING oil before the 20th century. but no, history ended in 1995.
we might need to outlaw cars, corporations, funded political campaigns, gasoline, golf courses, most uses of plastic. there's absolutely no reason to think we HAVE to continue permitting these things that are barely a century old.
and the fucking democrats acknowledge that we need to do something about them but - gosh! we can't just make something illegal! that would be so MEAN. a tax penalty. that'll accomplish something other than an 11% reduction of staff
literally any fine or tax penalty imposed on a business translates penny for penny to a decrease in staffing expenditures. it is never felt whatsoever by the people in charge. the democrats act like they don't fucking know this.
I can think of like six laws passed in the last decade that fucking mattered and the rest were wishy washy horseshit that was nullified by corporate profiteering
we're all going to fucking die if we don't outlaw some shit
