The UK prime minister has embarked on a “buy time” strategy – and the risks of a “no deal by accident” are increasing, according to the assessment of a senior European diplomat contained in a note prepared for their capital seen by BuzzFeed News
The assessment states that UK-EU talks are helpful for May as a way to show that the process is ongoing, while she works to win over MPs in the UK. But the belief is that little of substance will happen in the next few weeks.
The assessment is sceptical that May will pivot to a softer Brexit because her priority is to keep her party together. There is a real risk is that we get to the March 20 European Council with the concrete possibility of a no deal happening “by accident”

Britain’s post-Brexit trade conundrum. A short story.

I had a meeting this morning with a Japanese diplomat who said Japan doesn’t want to simply replicate the same terms of its EU FTA with the UK (as reported by the FT here: ft.com/content/5ce60a…).
The diplomat said the EU FTA was a good basis, but Japan wants the FTA with the UK to be “more ambitious.” Asked what he meant by this, and examples, they mentioned the UK liberalising rules and regulations in some areas once it leaves the EU
The diplomat also said the two sides has been exchanging views, but hadn’t yet started negotiations proper.

EU27 ambassadors met this afternoon to get a debrief on Juncker-May meeting, as well as meetings with Barclay/Cox, and Corbyn

- EU position is unchanged. Withdrawal agreement cannot be reopened. EU can only reexplain the backstop, and work further on the political declaration
- prime minister May said she wouldn’t extend art. 50, but the feeling is this could be tactics to push MPs to the brink

- EU will not hold a special Brexit EUCO unless it’s clear a deal has support in the Commons. Feeling is that a consensus is not in sight yet
- Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn stressed that he wanted to avoid no-deal, but the feeling is that his priority is an election.

- Work on no-deal preparations & legislation is ramping up.

Mary’s husband has died. She lives alone with her young at son, let’s call him Nigel. He has lived with his mum until he was 46 in Brussels. Her other sons live abroad.
15 years ago, Mary, in agreement with all 3 sons agreed to sign her house over to Nigel, under the provision h would look after her in her old age. All sons agreed this is fair.
