Comments by Bill and Melinda Gates in their letter today on the current state and future of textbooks are interesting. geekwire.com/2019/bill-gate… Years ago I provided input on early drafts of his two books, which discussed this issue and others.
Bill's 1995 book The Road Ahead contained a CD-ROM.
Bill Gates was taught by his parents to write thank you notes by hand. These notes are a wonderful thing to receive. I will always remember receiving this one. I felt like I made a small positive difference. It felt very good to receive a book signed in this way.

1/ IBM’s OS/2 vs Microsoft's Windows was an important period in the history of PCs and computing. People who were not around then too often have a false view of what happened (e.g. MSFT head fake) and even people who were there can have different recollections (Rashomon effects).
2/ Understanding OS/2 requires understanding the original MSFT-IBM contracts for DOS (there were several over the years). In the summer of 1980 IBM approached Microsoft about creating an operating system for a PC. Microsoft had 80 employees and would have sales of $8M that year.
3/ Bill Gates: "IBM wanted to bring its PC to market in less than a year. In order to meet this schedule it had to abandon doing all the hardware and software itself. This created essentially open architecture, easy to copy." IBM paid MSFT a one-time fee of $80,000 for MS-DOS.

Today's movies-on-TV thread is devoted to a single film. The debut, 60 years ago today, of Dieterle's brilliant HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939) on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' I first saw this masterpiece during at least one of its 16 showings on Channel 9 during New Year week.
HUNCHBACK was was the only film shown at the first Cannes Film Festival in 1939, cancelled after World War II broke out. It was among the most famous of the 700-plus movies acquired by WOR's parent company, RKO General, when it bought the failing studio from Howard Hughes in 1955
I'm going to focus on two issues: how WOR severely cut the film for its first TV showings, as well as its mysterious, little-known showing on another New York City TV station 14 years earlier, which is why I'm not labeling its first appearance on MDM 12/29/58 as a "NY TV debut.''
