After an unhinged political leader declared a fake emergency & ripped children from their parents in Bethlehem, Jesus started a poor people’s movement that brought hope & healing to the masses. #NotesFromNationalEmergency
In churches across America today, his stump speech will be read aloud:
“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”
It’s a message filled w/ the resilience that makes real resistance possible—a revolutionary love ethic rooted in the conviction that I am somebody, no matter what the powerful say, b/c the God of the universe made me.
From this place of inherent dignity, Jesus teaches pity for Presidents & preacher who think they can play golf & live their best lives now:
“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry.“
No people in America have ever understood the message of Jesus better than the enslaved women & men who learned to sing: “You got shoes, I got shoes. All God’s children got shoes...” and, in the same song, “Everybody talkin’ ‘bout heaven ain’t goin’ there.”
