Demand drivers for Airbnb: "Younger people because its much cheaper than a hotel room. Younger people also for same reason as older people is community."

The internet has expanded the surface area available for traditional social signaling (from @patrick_oshag's excellent podcast)
with more options available to demonstrate status, humans should continue to place higher & higher values on a shrinking basket of goods & services & experiences & relationships that stratify us against one another, giving those things defensible pricing power
The obvious themes supported by more available "status inventory" are luxury products, healthcare / well being, and travel. Non coincidentally, those are all secularly growing industries.

The Luxury Strategy = best book I read in 2018. A tour de force on product marketing, brand strategy, failures & successes of current players. An equally valuable book for an operator as for an investor.
Have read numerous other books serving as industry primers (eg Junk to Gold; Ticketmasters), but nothing like this.
What similar books would you recommend that serve as deep dives into a niche industry?

Barry Diller is one of the more engaging and quotable interview subjects but there is nothing more frustrating than him being a) constantly interrupted b) asked mostly about things other than the companies he controls. Will pull out some of the good stuff. recode.net/2019/2/18/1822…
He makes a distinction between narrative media, using screens to tell a story. and using screens for "other purposes", then uses this framework to describe how QVC opened his eyes to technology convergence and the consumer internet
it's fun to compare his retelling of the story today to the real time documentation

Now that the #netneutrality vote has happened, here are my rules as a #consumer and #Customer that I will use to decide who gets my dollar bills.

1>$ I will be subscribing to the services and providers who voluntarily maintain the closest model of #netneutrality.

If @Comcast starts charging for prioritized services, I will not only opt for the cheapest and most basic plan possible...
2>$ ...I will move to any other #ISP that maintains fair and open access. I will move to a new neighborhood if I must.

I can go back to cellular or satellite internet, or 1995-style #dialup if it means supporting fair and open access providers. 96kb #ISDN? I'm lovin it.
