We introduced what we call Flex at Lambda School. It’s actually a real-life application of Bloom’s 2 Sigma Problem:

Students with mastery learning and one on one tutoring perform TWO STANDARD DEVIATIONS better than students learning under conventional methods

Every student is grouped in a very small cohort (6-8) based on the level of learning they should be at, and that group has a single paid mentor all day. They focus on the objectives from a single “sprint” or module until mastery.

It’s expensive as as hell, but the results...

* We’ve had 811 repeat sprints, with an 87% pass rate (5% higher than first attempt totals)

* 221 students who would have been behind, lost, or possibly even dropped from the program altogether are now firmly on the path to their first job

* 184 (or 83% of) students who’ve repeated a week firmed up their skills, and haven’t needed to repeat another week again

* Students who take advantage of Flex average higher satisfaction and on receive *higher* ratings in technical and collaboration skills

So yes, literally every single Lambda School student is in a small group of 6-8 students with a dedicated, paid mentor.

It costs a fortune, but the results are undeniable, and because our incentives are aligned with our students we’re happy to pay it.
