I have a confession: The idea for Basecamp wasn’t eating me alive inside. It was just something we needed, that we knew how to build, and then other people asked if they could use it too 🤷♂️
In fact, I’d argue that “intensity porn” is closely related to “struggle porn” and “hustle mania”. When something is “eating you alive”, you’re justified to sacrifice all and everything in pursuit of Le Glory. I think most businesses are much more mundane than that. Thankfully!
I continue working on Basecamp because it allows me to do several of my favorite things: Write Ruby code, share lessons/experiences, and provide a great work environment to others. Not because I JUST CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT TODOS, EVENTS, MESSAGES, PROJECT MANAGEMENT.
You’re allowed to be an entrepreneur without choking on passion for the particulars of your pursuit. Sure, it helps if you LIKE your domain, but don’t let a lack of ALL-CONSUMING LOVE hold you back.
