What's clear to me is that the NEB has denied this motion because the Trudeau government specifically excluded climate change impacts from a full review of this pipeline. Thread 1/
They say they are climate champions but they won't review climate impacts and they are desperate to build more fossil fuel infrastructure. This decision exposes the governments climate change agenda as political and not based on science. 2/
In drafting our motion we consulted with @IPCC_CH scientists who clearly stated that new fossil fuel infrastructure and the expansion of the oilsands is inconsistent with a the Paris agreement and an ambition of limiting warming to 1.5C 3/
I believe @gmbutts when he said yesterday that action on climate change is critical and I suspect there are many in this government who believe that. That's why its even more remarkable that they are refusing a full climate review of this project 4/
And they have managed to convince themselves that this one pipeline (and for that matter LNG Canada) is consistent with our climate goals. They used to point to the Alberta emissions cap to justify oilsands expansion. But they can't do that anymore 5/
So they simply talk about their carbon tax and the industry defaults to how we have "a right to produce' and the "world uses oil" and the IEA demand projections. but here is the thing: 6/
The carbon tax and the other measures identified in the Pan Canadian Climate Plan are not enough to even meet Harpers weak targets. Thats because of the growth of emissions from the oil and gas sector. And...the tax should incentivize a move away from fossil fuels but...7/
It won't if we are giving all the money back to the industry. Which we are. Huge loopholes in the carbon tax for oil and gas & they are getting billions back. Yes the world needs & uses oil but no one is saying that we stop producing overnight. We are saying stop expansion 8/
You only need to build #transmountain if we are expanding oilsands. We cannot expand oilsands & do our part in ensuring a safe climate. IEA demand projections that @OilGasCanada relies on are predicated on failing to address climate change - a 3 degree world 9/
That's not good enough. It says that we have given up. @JustinTrudeau @cathmckenna say we are committed to Paris goals & safe climate. If thats true we would align our infrastructure decisions and oil and gas production with 1.5C and a safe climate and not build the TMX expansion
Our statement with quote from @IPCC_CH scientist stand.earth/latest/neb-den…
Today's decision by the NEB is climate denial pure and simple and begs the question: If @JustinTrudeau believes building this pipeline is consistent with action on climate, why is he afraid of a scientific review? #cdnpol #bcpoli #abpoli #transmountain
