To all the conspiracy theorists out there: of course Cdn nonprofit groups raise money globally. So do oil companies. The majority of Canada’s trade is with the US. We export 68% of our goods to there. The majority of oilsands investment comes from the US. 1/
It’s how our economy works. Let me say that again: the majority of oil sands companies even those that are Canadian are ‘foreign funded’. The oil industry and the Alberta government and the Federal government are spending millions on pipeline ad campaigns 2/
What nonprofit groups spend is tiny in comparison. Most groups I know get a lot of their donations from concerned Canadians but yes some funds come from foundations from the US. These are global issues climate change, species loss, threats to fresh water, that know no boundaries
This is a critical moment in our country’s debate and this attack on environmental groups is just another way to deflect from the core issue - that pipeline expansion means oilsands expansion and emissions expansion 4/
Oil and gas is the largest component of Canada’s emissions profile now and growing the fastest. New pipelines only lock us into more production at a time when the climate can’t handle more and world markets are changing making this a risky investment 5/
Thousands of Canadians know this and have been organizing across the country. Because we want a plan for Alberta and the rest of the country to ensure clean, safe jobs and safe climate. That means economic diversification & investments in other industries 6/
The Alberta government alone spent 23 Million on PR last year just on TransMountain. And industry has been relentless trying to convince the country to bail them out - despite the fact that many including Suncor and CNRL made record profits last year 6/
Make no mistake about it.The campaign for a bailout by the oil industry is a campaign.Notley & Trudeau are playing right into their hands. We only ‘need’ this pipeline if we are going to expand production of fossil fuels at a moment in history when we know they threaten our safety
Thank goodness for philanthropic donations. But more importantly thank you to the indigenous leaders who are leading the charge against TMX & other pipelines. Thank you to the scientists & teachers & students & thousands more who are standing about.
