A write-up in Politico yesterday made a lot of strong claims about potential foreign disinformation campaigns targeting presidential candidates. I want to share a few quick thoughts and provide additional clarity. politico.com/story/2019/02/…

The #VoterFraud authors were clear about the limits of their methodology and went further than most by releasing the underlying accounts they studied to enable peer review.
The presence of a group of accounts Tweeting about divisive political themes isn’t the same as an information operation — calling it one can unproductively muddy the waters.
I worry when real people are accused of being bots, trolls, or unwitting participants in influence operations. Those accusations undermine our ability to engage in healthy conversations with people we disagree with.
We appreciate journalists’ attention to the issue as there’s no doubt attempts at disinformation campaigns, both domestic and foreign, will continue as more political candidates announce and as we approach 2020.
