86% of Republicans say that accepting people of diverse racial and religious backgrounds is an important part of being "truly American".

Americans tend to think that workplaces, the military, and universities are unifying institutions, while the media is a divisive institution.
(subject to the expected partisan differences, of course.)
Republicans and Democrats tend to be united on some policies related to drugs, crime, and health care, but strongly divided on immigration, minimum wage, and gun control.
Most Democrats are strongly pro-diversity, while most Republicans are lukewarm on the idea. But very few of any party are opposed.
Republicans are even more likely than Democrats to think that Trump's citizenship question would make the Census less accurate.

Interesting thread. But it's important to convert to purchasing power parity, since most of this is just exchange rate movements.

Iraq GDP per capita in 2002: ~$12,000

In 2017: ~$15,600

That's about a 30% gain in 15 years.

For the U.S., the gain over that period was 57%.
Now, those figures aren't inflation-adjusted.

If we look at inflation-adjusted growth from 2002-2017, Iraq actually grew by about 43% total.

That's about a 2.4% annualized real per capita growth rate.
In other words, the idea that Iraq is much richer now than before the U.S. invasion, or has grown at a rapid pace in the last few years, is just not true.

There has been modest progress. I'd expect as much just from the lifting of U.S. sanctions!

1/OK so here's a thought I had about superstar cities and crappy politics.

Short version: Superstar cities lull people into believing that nothing could ever hurt the economy.
2/I had this thought because of Amazon. In the end, it doesn't matter if NYC boots Amazon, because NYC is a superstar city. Companies will still want to come to NYC, and there will still be plenty of jobs.

3/NYC has this magic invincibility because it's a superstar city.

Thanks to the awesome power of KNOWLEDGE-INDUSTRY CLUSTERING EFFECTS, NYC can relax. Its prosperity is basically assured.

Here's the truth: without the Civil Rights movement, South Asian America as we know it might not exist.
U.S. laws long restricted immigration from South Asia. While several thousand South Asians had made their way to the United States by the early 20th century, the Immigration Act of 1917 explicitly barred our immigration.

2. I'll start with the nicest thing you can say about white evangelicals, which is that 16% of them say they will never approve of Trump. That's a minority within a minority, and overall the demographic is defined by nativism.

2-a. I and I suspect most in the #Exvangelical community have never understood this 16% of white evangelicals. A word of caution--saying they will never approve of Trump doesn't mean they all won't vote GOP. But there are a few genuinely progressive white evangelicals out there.

Don’t get distracted by the latest Trump nonsense.

That was the key takeaway from my MIB interview with Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert. After the first GOP debate in 2015, he recognized Trump’s style of communication as “uniquely effective.”
In real time, publicly in print – he forecast Trump would win GOP nomination + the general election. People laughed at him.

Adams observes Trump is a communication wizard, who understands mass media better than every politician and most people in the media.
Trump’s latest pronouncement is an example of what Adams meant.

This morning, Axios reported President Trump was signing an executive order. In it, he will end Birthright – the guarantee in the 14th Amendment that every person born on US soil is automatically a U.S. citizen.
