Short thread on @Pontifex speech in conclusion of #PBC2019 on the abuse crisis.
1) The first part of the speech sounds alien to the Church issue. But it is not.
Francis talks about a Church not under siege by the world; not a Church separated from the world. Church in the world

2) A Church in the world in at least two meanings: 1) the Church is *in the world*, not an entity magically safe from evil; 2) the crisis is a *global* crisis for the Catholic Church.

3) Francis rejects the ideological connection made often between modern/post-modern post-1960s decay of morality and the phenomenon of sexual abuse. Sexual abuse has a much longer history.

4) The Church’s fight against sexual abuse in the Church is part and contribution to the larger and century-long cultural and spiritual evolution and conversion of the human consciousness about the violence against the children, minors, and vulnerable.

5) Francis refuses a simplistic “law and order” ("giustizialismo") approach to the crisis: a spiritual crisis that no new law or culture of “good practices” alone can solve.
