Turkey wants freedom of movement as the "price" of a post-Brexit trade deal with the UK. That's more than they have now, of course, but we're weak supplicants with no cards to play, so it's hardly a surprise. How does "taking back control" feel now, folks?

And let's be very clear about it, that's to restore the current status quo. In other words, we are having to make very significant concessions to get BACK TO ZERO from being behind. That's Brexit in a nutshell.
And that's just Turkey. Japan's already said they want more concessions before they will consider a trade deal (i.e. we can't roll over the existing EU trade deal). Other countries are holding out too. And of course the US wants us to take their horrid food and hand over the NHS.

Jeremy Corbyn may be pushing towards a People's Vote on Brexit for *2* reasons:
- Stem the tide of defections (may not stop it entirely, but should slow it significantly)
- bring the issue to a head at a point of lowish support for it in the HOC.
It's win-win for him: he stops the rot, and get to look as if he's fulfilling the wishes of Labour members... when there's a very good chance the People's Vote amendment will get voted down, neatly taking the "problem" (as JC sees it) off the table without opposing Labour policy.
But then what? What's the plan when the PV vote fails? Back May's plan? Sit in the corner and sulk (abstain)? What will JC do next?

These questions may become pertinent VERY soon!

You may not have much sympathy when you hear about people forced to repay huge sums to HMRC, or facing bankruptcy, because of the "loan charge". But remember:
- under the rules at the time, it was tax avoidance (legal) not evasion (illegal) - that has been changed retroactively.
- A lot of miss-selling went on. Taxation is a complex affair at the best of times, and huge numbers of firms were offering to set up these kinds of arrangements. It's inevitable that some cut corners in explaining the ramifications to their customers.
Anyway, just thought I'd bring it up, because this won't get a lot of mainstream coverage with Brexit shouting "Look at me! Look at me!" all day every day.

News emerging about our planned tariffs after a no deal Brexit. Sounds like a very bumpy ride ahead. (And expensive cars!). Hopefully the full document will come out soon.
And of course, if the UK's default position is zero tariffs on most sectors (which must be applied to all WTO members under Most Favoured Nation clause) then the incentive for other countries to do trade deals evaporates, because there aren't any tariffs to eliminate.
Another problem is that we're only talking about OUR tariffs. UK exports will still be subject to applicable tariffs, so "Made in the UK" is about to mean "very expensive", devastating exporters. And since nobody will want to do trade deals, that will become the new normal.

EU and UK negotiatiors spent months thinking round bilaterally acceptable solutions to the backstop. They arrived at current document. Reminder: the UK-wide customs arrangement with the EU featured in the backstop was requested by HMG not Brussels 2
Withdrawal Agreement already says EU open to alternatives to backstop eg using technology if and when viable BUT EU no deal planning documents clearly say in case if no deal #Brexit some physical checks will have to take place. Technology alone doesnt cut the mustard for the EU 3

After blunt statement yesterday on hard border being outcome of a no deal #Brexit Commission spks @MargSchinas today underlines "EU is fully behind Ireland" and "EU is determined to do all it can, deal or no deal, to avoid the need for a border and to protect peace in NI" but 1
In its no deal planning document from December the Commission stated that checks on livestock and agri products would take place after a no deal #Brexit EU juggling protecting Good Friday Agreement with protecting its single market 2
One option on table is having checks in France/Netherlands so as to avoid having them on island of Ireland but this would have clear impact on Irish trade. This is a very delicate intra-EU debate. EU keen to show solidarity with member state Ireland 3

1) How much of a threat is the Spain/Gibraltar question to the #Brexit summit on Sunday? This issue has the potential to be either a) huge or b) to disappear in to a puff of smoke
2) Spain feels hoodwinked. Gibraltar is of huge national interest (and hurt pride) for many Spaniards. Many at the very least saw an opportunity with #Brexit to gain considerable influence over the Rock
3) At the beginning of #Brexit negotiations Spain was promised that no decisions could be taken over the future of Gibraltar without consultation with Spain which is why throughout the negotiations process, there have been bilateral Spain-U.K. talks in parallel

1) Ambassadors of 27 EU governments expected to see draft of political declaration on post #brexit EU-UK future this morning. Should start leaking out soon after if that is the case ..
2) PM’s suddenly scheduled extra meetings in Brussels on Saturday are, I suspect, part-choreography for U.K. domestic consumption to give sense of her battling the EU to win ‘concessions’ at the last moment
3) That said, there are issues on table - such as the PM insisting on language in political declaration implying that her Chequers #Brexit plan is not dead

1. This is going to sound a bit preachy but I'm going to roll with it anyway. The Tory Brexiters have pulled a fast one. They have shifted to goalposts and now propagandists are spinning the narrative that any deal is a betrayal of #Brexit. These people are professional liars.
2. If we had a functioning media the people who say we can rely on WTO rules as a basis for our post-Brexit trade relations would be hauled over the coals by all of the major newspapers because it is not a matter of mere opinion. It is an outright demonstrable lie.
3. But rather than outing liars as indeed our media should, many vessels are actually complicit in the lie. Particularly BrexitCentral, City AM, The Telegraph, the Express and The Spectator. They will give houseroom to liars without flinching. This is what they do now.
