In Aug 2017, the federal govt terminated the Federal Advisory Committee for the Sustained National Climate Assessment. Now, they plan to set up an "ad hoc group of select federal scientists to reassess the government’s analysis of climate science" (thread) washingtonpost.com/national/healt…
The goal of this new "National Security Council committee" is apparently to question the findings of recent federal climate science reports: which just so happen to already be THE most thoroughly reviewed docs on climate in the entire country! axios.com/white-house-cl…
Each volume of the US National Climate Asst went through two rounds of federal agency review and one public comment period, where any of these committee members could have commented and reviewed it, if they so desired.
Every comment received and our authors' response to that comment is public record. You can read them yourself at the bottom of this page (vol 1) science2017.globalchange.gov/downloads/ and (vol 2) nca2018.globalchange.gov/downloads/
In addition, @theNASEM convened a special expert review panel for each volume of the national climate assessment. The committee's review for Vol1 was over 100 pages long; Vol2, over 200 pages. Both these reviews and author responses are also public record (see links above).
Who is going to review the federal climate reports who has not already had the chance? The answer is no one. Everyone had a chance to review the reports before they were released by this administration - and if they were part of a federal agency, they had multiple chances.
The reality is that this is the same "red team-blue team" proposal we've been hearing about for years, with some new window-dressing on it. But you know what? There's already a red team report. It's the climate assessment that was approved by and released by this administration!
Assembling a panel to review the already incredibly extensively-reviewed federal climate reports "is like assembling a panel of 'gravity skeptics' who insist it’s safe to jump off tall buildings, except in this case they want to take us all with them" says @DrKateMarvel
