The striking thing about Medium’s vision here (full disclosure, I’m an advisor, but am just reading this piece as a writer on the platform) is it addresses most causes of media manipulation on social platforms while also providing direct-pay subscription economics for writers.
It doesn’t solve *every* problem of ad-supported written media, but is probably doing a much better job than any other platform. Obviously, Medium will have to (re-)earn trust with a lot of creators, but it’s like if YouTube had had Patreon baked in, instead of… well, you know.
This is very smart.
