As I’ve said endlessly, when Mike Schmidt of the NYT is bylined on a story that includes Don McGahn, it nearly always follows a pattern:

- inculcates Trump in wrong-doing
- distances McGahn from the decision
- positions McGahn as the overruled voice of reason

I am very much of the belief that McGahn or a proxy is one of Schmidt’s sources for these stories.

I’m also of the beliefs:

1) McGahn is no dummy
2) He has covered his own a** well
3) He has cooperated/is cooperating with Mueller
4) He’ll escape unscathed
5) Trump won’t

Not sure if this was obvious or not but Michael Cohen turned over a very short list of documents but there was a subtext.

They were documents showing clear criminality.

Among those documents:

Financial statements from 2012-14 Trump used to seek a loan from Deutsche Bank.

So, to put a very fine point on it:

Michael Cohen turned over to the House evidence he believes nails Trump for clear felonies.

And added subtext though:

A bank doesn’t generally dole out hundreds of millions in loans based solely on a borrower’s say-so.

Deutsche Bank would have been negligent - potentially criminally so - if it hadn’t done its own due diligence on the accuracy of the loan application.

Banks don’t generally need to be prodded to vet applications.

Benign negligence would seem highly unlikely.

Absolutely ERUPTS about how the ACTUAL first hearing he chaired this session was about a woman dying because she couldn’t afford her insulin.

Cohen just burned Gym Jordan's ass. Oh. My. Lord.

Jordan tries to claim Cohen is mad he didn't get a WH job.

Cohen responds "I can tell you a story about Mr. Trump reaming out Reince Priebus because I turned down a job working with Don McGahn."

Jordan tried to use his first 5-minute block of questioning to paint Cohen as a disgruntled and overlooked former staffer.

Cohen just introduced an entire new line of inquiry for reporters to pursue: Trump tried to bring his fixer into the White House...

Back. Fire. City.
...and Cohen provided multiple corroborating witnesses: Priebus, McGahn, and attorneys he brought in to inform Trump that his joining of the White House staff would sever his attorney-client privilege.

Jordan just had his attempted grenade shoved down his own question-hole.

Let’s not fall for Trump’s same old tired game. He leaked the draft national emergency declaration tonight to try to scare people into caving to him. If he had the muscle to pull off doing it, he’d be doing it, not talking about it. Trump has zero leverage at this point...
Trump keeps caving by the hour. First he gave away the State of the Union last night. Now he’s hinting he’ll accept far less than $5 billion for his wall. If he were preparing to wave a national emergency magic wand to get what he wants, he wouldn’t be caving like this....
Even if Trump did declare a national emergency, it would take him years to forcibly seize the necessary land. He has weeks of oxygen left, not years. The courts would shut it all down long before that anyway. Even he wouldn’t be able to spin it as a victory. He knows this...
