Some people still don't understand that walking away from UK/EU negotiations does *not* mean carrying on with the status quo.
I've had a look around the Leave bubble this morning and it's not just the twits at LeaveEU. This 'Trump/Kim parallel' seems to be being widely made/echoed.
I will add that entering the Leave bubble (via another Twitter account) is such a depressing experience. Truth and lies all blended together.
They are truly lost among themselves.
What's so saddening is one can find people who are quite good at arguing their case... and they then retweet or support someone known to be grossly unreliable.
So it's about maintaining one's node in the Leave network in order to keep the network strong. It's not about truth.
The issue with Leave is not that it's abjectly untrue; it's that it's "nearly true".

Essentially swapping Romanians for Nigerians. Which back in 2016 prompted others to comment this would obviously cause an *increase* in immigration. /2
It was a bullshit policy designed to avoid the charge of racism and to simultaneously invoke a sense of British fairness.

It leads directly to Foges' observations.

Yet again, if Leave voters want to feel betrayed, they need look no further than their own leaders. /ends

In the beginning was the word, and the word was Brexit.

Some thoughts on belief in Brexit, where it comes from and how it's sustained..... /1
Firstly, it is perfectly respectable to believe one's country should not have to participate in an ever closer political union with other countries and thereby release/'pool'/'lose control'* over some sovereignty. /2

* choose which one works with your predisposition.
That 'sovereignty' instinct is often at the start of someone's Brexit journey. They then become quickly convinced and categorical about the fact that Brexit is 'right' as they very soon see other things that confirm their rightness.
But what is actually going on here? /3

Is it just possible that like some of us Maastricht sceptics for whom 2016 was a chance to vote on unfinished business "after the fact", perhaps those provoked by the post-2004 wave of immigration used the 2016 vote in a similar "after the fact" way?
If so, the answer is to have greater direct democracy on governance issues and on societal change issues *at the point they arise*.

Quelling issues so they fester just threatens a bigger blow-out further down the line.
That comes back to reconnecting the governed with governors.... which was the point of the Leave vote.

Thank you @jillongovt for posting this-must listen. Great to have a focus on the future. Interestingly I disagree with Sir Ivan on his portrayal of the #EU approach to negs- technocratic & run by the theologians & not strategic in summary. @BrigidLaffan
In my view EU had 3 strategic interests to protect in Brexit negs which it has done. 1. Following the portrayal of EU as weak & disintegrating during ref, EU had to assert its centrality in Europe. @BrigidLaffan
2. Membership has to matter/a departing state that wants to retain a lot of the status quo cannot be allowed to do so. 3. The rules based system had to be protected. @BrigidLaffan

Here is a good example of why Twitter sucks:

Rubio has been working for months+ to try to help bring freedom to a country being decimated by a brutal socialist dictator starving/killing his own people. He has almost single-handedly helped shift U.S. policy on Venezuela. 1/
Almost every Venezuelan I've talked to is grateful. They wish for freedom for their people, and see him as doing everything he can to help them achieve it (though they are leading the effort themselves).

He's tweeting almost hourly updates on what is happening.
Now a bunch of people who have completely ignored the plight of the Venezuelan people and Rubio's commendable efforts instead chose today to take a very uncharitable reading of one of his tweets and attack him for it, while they continue to ignore things that matter.

Amid reports that #UK PM @theresa_may hopes to renegotiate the "backstop" provision on the Northern Ireland border, let's recall that she already made clear what she wants in her letter to #EU leaders before disastrously losing the #Brexit Withdrawal Treaty ratification vote. 1/
"This could be mitigated by changes to the backstop itself," she wrote to @eucopresident & @JunckerEU "Proposals for a way in which the UK could choose to exit the backstop unilaterally were it ever to come into force, or for a hard time limit... 2/
on the duration of the usage of the backstop, have been raised and discussed in Parliament. We have also raised them previously in negotiations." So there are her proposals, i.e. the EU should basically just cave on backstop in face of House of Commons defeat. But but but ... 3/

1. No doubt we will see a procession of smug, self-serving articles about how the #Brexit deal is "giving up control" but the regulatory alignment that exists is only a faction of the EU acquis and covers areas largely governed by best practice. (thread)
2. In terms of food and product safety the overarching regulatory framework will be EU by design but the standards themselves will be Codex, IEC, ISO and UNECE - bodies in which we will have either the same or greater say.
3. As with labour rights and environment standards the baseline in any future deal will be ILO conventions and environment rules will roll over since we are obliged by a number of global accords, not least the Paris Convention. Brexit never did mean rampant deregulation.

This is gonna be long, but I think it's worth it. A well-regarded twitter poster, let’s call him Giorgio, has recently publish a thread stating among other things as follows. “The pathways to stopping or delaying Brexit are blocked.
But once the mandate is discharged, the pathways to UK rejoining, or being in a close association agreement with EU, within the single market and customs union, will be open, with no obstacles.”
This approach annoys me for two reasons, one because Giorgio seems to be attempting to cajole Remainers to put all activity on hold until we actually leave the #EU.
