Okay, let's talk about animation tools.

As I mentioned yesterday, making GIFs is as easy as drawing still pictures and putting them into a GIF maker.

There's also flip books and stop motion!
If you're looking for programs, I haven't found much of a match for Adobe After Effects.

But there are a few cool programs.

@Mohotwitter (Moho, prev Anime Studio) is probably my favorite alt 2D animation softward.
For 3D, you should definitely check out

@maxon3d (Cinema 4D) and @blender_org (Blender)

I've seen absolutely amazing stuff in both, but love that Blender is a free and open source software!
@maxon3d @blender_org And one you might not have thought about, but that I'm thinking about A LOT is @unity3d .

I've been playing with game design lately, and Unity has some AMAZING tools and plugins for animating right in the program!!!

I'll def be using this more!

First things first - Who even ARE the people you want to come to this? Identify your audience! This will make things MUCH easier when it comes to marketing. Here's some questions to ask yourself and your team to ID your target audience:
-What's their age range?
-What other events do they go to?
-What TV shows do they watch?
-What podcasts do they listen to?
-What kind of work do they do? What kind of schedule do they have?
-Where do they live?
-What's their income level? What do they spend on?

Hello SciComm! Today we're doing a stage skills boot camp - I'm going to lay out the specific skills and knowledge you'll need as a non-stage professional to do a great talk, be a great guest on a show, and be way less anxious about it (you'll still be anxious, everybody is!)
The MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember through all of this is: What you're doing is FOR 👏 THE 👏 AUDIENCE 👏. Making sure they can hear you, see you, and understand you. It's not about YOU being comfortable. Being on stage is deeply uncomfortable, it's just a human reaction!
First up - making sure they can 👂 hear you.
I cannot stress this enough:
If there is a mic.
USE. THE. MIC.
A lot of people go "no, I'm a loud talker, I can just talk loud!", and the answer is no. Here's why -

Hello nerds!
Today we're talking about building a science show - I'm going to walk you through the process of taking a show from cool idea to actual event on stage in front of lots of people, and the big tripping points along the way (esp for folks who are new to the stage)
First things first - I'm not talking about a lecture, or a panel (although those can be PART of a science show). I'm talking about a SHOW, which is an event onstage meant to entertain. Most shows have the singular goal of entertaining, but ours is going to do even more...
...It's going to use science as our material to entertain people. It's really important to keep that goal of entertaining front-and-center while building this, and not to downplay the skills and experience those in the entertainment industry can add here.

🎬 Let's start that thread with that animation:
✏️ First, the background. Nothing very special here. I did it with Photoshop, layer by layer (mainly because in a preliminary version of the Trailer, there was supposed to be a parallax scrolling).
🚀For the ship model, I used Windows 10 own 3D Builder software (!) which is very simple and very easy to use. Perfect for my needs in this particular case (+ you can export in a format (.ply) Photoshop would recognizes better)

Okay. So. It's time once again for me to do that thing I do: a deep dive into Trump's state of the union speech.
For new followers who've tuned in since the last time I did this, bear in mind I am not a factchecker. That's a different (though related) skill set and best done by people with the training, resources, and editorial oversight that I don't have.
What I do have is a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people who don't like long, reflective Twitter threads or believe it's possible to overthink something.
