For as long as I remember, I've loved science and also science fiction. 🚀 Science came first for me, but for many, it's been the other way around.

SF is great for inspiring future scientists and igniting interest in science. Luckily, #scicomm & #outreach has begun to notice! ⬇️ Image
I'm currently leading the 'Science Fiction as An Astrobiology Outreach & Education Tool' at @EAIastrobiology. We used reprint SF stories accompanied by original science essays in 'Strangest of All', released last spring to aid outreach amidst lockdowns.

The positive response prompted us to edit a bigger, more ambitious print book of original astrobiological SF and essays. Titled Life Beyond Us, it's just funded on kickstarter and will be published next fall around the launch of @esa's Rosalind Franklin!

Here we go! Just watch next they will say that covid-18 and h1n2 ‘mutated’ together and they will call it covid-21. 😉👌🏻

“The virus was detected in mid-October after an Alberta patient sought medical care with influenza-like symptoms.“ edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…
“mostly just among pigs. In fact, they can infect each other the same way as humans, through expelled water droplets from coughs and sneezes. They can even transmit it without symptoms.”

“However, the jump from pig to human is incredibly rare.”

narcity.com/amp/rare-flu-t…
“The positive case was discovered after the patient went to a local hospital and was tested for Covid-19.”

“The individual sought was dealing with mild, influenza-like symptoms but quickly recovered.”

“no link to slaughterhouses”

Let’s talk about science and research for a second. Research journals are given a rating used to measure their importance based on citations. This is called an “Impact Factor”. An Impact Factor of >10 puts a journal near the top 1% of all cited journals. 1/x
So a high Impact Factor journal is widely considered reputable by the general scientific/research/medical community. So when a high Impact Factor journal comes out with a statement, it should be taken seriously. 2/x
Consider this article “Trump lied about science” from @ScienceMagazine (IF 41.85) science.sciencemag.org/content/sci/36… 3/x

I like #ScienceFiction, but the quality of a lot of #SF movies and TV is awful. A while ago I threatened to do a thread of rules for SF scripts. This is it.

All these rules degrade to mere guidelines if the drama is a comedy.

#ScienceFictionScriptRules ...
The overriding rule, never to be forgotten, is: "Coincidence is a failure of art." - Tom Stoppard

#ScienceFictionScriptRules
It is easy to blow something up. It is hard to have a character say something original, insightful and clever. But writers are dirt cheap. The ratio of explosions to wit should be 1:10 or less.

For our #WednesdayWisdom let's look back at a landmark #RPG that let you jump from star to star across the Imperium, trading and battling with various sophonts along the way.

It's a game of the far future that's lasted over 40 years: Traveller!
Traveller is a #ScienceFiction fiction role-playing game, first published in 1977 by Game Designers' Workshop. Launched a year before TSRs rival Gamma World it's probably* the superior SF RPG - its certainly stood the test of time.

(*Don't @ me!)
Traveller features various descendants of humanity with different skills and abilities. Your ship can jump faster than light to reach other planets but you can't communicate FTL, so you have to deal with whatever world you jump to before moving somewhere else.

Over Talis' shoulder, the storm spanned the horizon. Thick, dark clouds of sand reached up to blot the searing sun from the sky. This wall of death stretched up more than a mile. Her death, if she didn't get out of the Razorsand Sea.

Jefa's dying screams echoed in her head, even as she gunned the runnerbike and took off. On Toxous' order, she'd been fed to an acidworm for some perceived slight on his part. Seeing her lover's flesh disolve made Talis want to vomit.

I have cited AO3's taxonomy and archiving systems as models at academic linguistics conferences because they are IMPRESSIVE as usable, durable, well-designed systems, and frankly academia could stand to learn from fandom here
Here's an example: rights transfer and orphaning

Academic archives are patchy when the original depositor of the data dies or doesn't want to be responsible for it anymore. AO3 has a whole system in place to transfer fic to another user or leave it up without your name attached
I was literally at a conference a few years ago when an academic was like "oh yeah we just don't know how to deal with rights transfer at our archive" and I pulled up AO3's orphaning policy as a model

Vonda N McIntyre died this morning. When we signed the contract in January to republish her first novel, she didn't know she was ill. When she told us her diagnosis, we wanted to make sure she would see the cover, and would try to have The Exile Waiting republished in time. 1/
@JaneCornwell10 immediately got going on the cover art that we'd commissioned, and @unamccormack managed to reorganise her schedule to be able to send us the 7000 word introduction by the summer. I shoved books around to make room in our schedule too. 2/
Vonda did see the cover, and really liked it, but she won't see her first book back in print. It'll be out on 21 October, and will be launched at #FantasyCon in Glasgow. She was a visionary #sciencefiction writer, and won the big prizes with Exile's sequel, Dreamsnake. 3/

The Economic Lessons of Star Trek’s Money-Free Society
wired.com/2016/05/geeks-…
It seems to me that if we wanted to devise a better socio-economic system, we should start with an understanding of where we want to end up, and try to build a bridge to that future.
Bertrand Russell suggested:
"The supreme principle, both in politics and in private life, should be to promote all that is creative, and so to diminish the impulses and desires that center round possession."
