BTW, I simultaneously hold that teachers AND the property-tax paying public are both being shafted by politicians and out-of-control politically correct group-thinking exploited by unions and administrators. Teachers (the good ones) are underpaid and property-taxes are too high.
Good teachers are worth their weight in gold, and frankly cannot be paid enough, but overall education spending is sky high and going higher all the time. The issue is two-fold:
a) Teachers are mostly paid on tenure, not performance
b) Gargantuan administrative overhead
If we don't get the teacher-to-administrator ratio under control, we're forever screwed. Notice how teachers are always used as the face of the educational establishment to raise property taxes.
Public quite rightly values and respects teachers. Unfortunately, there are more administrators than teachers in our schools, and an inordinate amount of scarce funds get sucked into value-destroying administration, displacing value-creating educational instruction.
Unions couldn't care less whether the schools hire more teachers or administrators. A dues paying union member is a dues paying union member. What they do is not union leaders' problem. And unfettered liberalism creates need for more and more administrative enforcers in schools.
There is somehow always money to hire another administrator but never enough money to buy the supplies that teachers have to buy out of their own pockets (I have been hearing about this canard for decades now, while the number of administrators has been steadily going up and up).
Would that a Democratic presidential candidate had the guts to call a spade a spade and lead a real educational reform movement to benefit the children rather than pander to unions to get votes.

The End.
