One problem with having a joke of a president is that his power is still real and no one wants to believe it.
This sort of reality bending is also typical. The truth is whatever he says *now*, not yesterday or last year. He was joking, or misinterpreted, or just so what? The truth is never knowable. Not his Twitter or his own words.
It also serves as a loyalty test and a way of tying his followers to him. He lies to their faces and watches to see who defends him anyway.
