I'll jump on this bandwagon, hopefully I can come up with satisfactory answers!
1. I'll say... Soul Reaver 2. The story in this game is so cool, combining themes of free will vs determinism, time travel, forgotten history... it's just a great ride. Also the way it's presented, with your character discovering and interpreting ancient murals, was unique.
2. Favorite female character? Hmm... Maybe Lara Croft from the rebooted Tomb Raider series. I really like the way she gets around the environment, and how she takes enemies out in stealth and using her bow. Very fun character.
3. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers on Game Gear. A basic but pretty fun 1 on 1 fighting game, easily the best of the early Power Rangers games. A good, surprisingly large cast featuring all 6 Rangers, 3 different Zords, Goldar, and a number of monsters.
4. Gone Home. Sam's story was just so fucking relatable and I was so worried about how it would turn out.
5. Is it okay to choose a company as big as Nintendo? I don't know enough about their different internal teams to pick one among them but they've been consistently strong for over 30 years as a whole, with only a handful of lean years in the late 90s.
6. Kain from the Legacy of Kain series. He's such a compelling performance, and I love how he rejects the world order that everyone else is so invested in upholding and tries to create something better.
7. Hmm five of my favorite soundtracks, in no particular order and not necessarily my top five:
F-Zero X
Chrono Trigger
Turtles in Time
Castlevania SotN (and all the others too, really)
Air Zonk
8. A game that not enough people talk about? How about Vice: Project Doom on NES? It's similar to Ninja Gaiden minus the unfair difficulty and with a sci-fi private eye, almost Blade Runner-like setting. But I never hear anyone talk about it unless I bring it up.
9. Ok this is the last time I'm gonna talk about Legacy of Kain I swear, but Moebius is such a great villain. He's such a slimy schemer but he never comes off as a "cool" villain, and he's a wimp you know you could destroy but you CAN NEVER GET YOUR HANDS ON HIM ARGH!
10. Mega Man 2. I loved the series as a whole, with 2-4 being my "Golden Age" for it. 1 was ok but more of a curiosity, and 5 was when the shine came off. I skipped 6 until years later, and briefly stuck around with the X series but X2 turned me off just like 5 did.
11. Again, no particular order and not necessarily top 5, also avoiding games I've already mentioned:
Killer Instinct (2013)
Fantasy Life
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3
Midnight Club 3
Ogre Battle 64
12. Hard to think of anything much I've never at least been interested in enough to try out once, but I guess I never really cared about... Gran Turismo? Realistic racing games just don't do it for me at all.
13. Frog from Chrono Trigger. I really dig his story of overcoming self-doubt and proving to himself that he can be good enough. Plus he's got a cool look and his theme music is rad.
14. Donkey Kong for NES, or more specifically the GBA port of it since it's portable and saves high scores. It's not arcade perfect but I think every change is an improvement, including the removal of the pie factory WHICH WAS AN AWFUL STAGE. Playing this game on GB micro... ❤️
15. A game everyone should play at least once? I'll say... Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It's got a great story & characters, amazing music, and it's something players of any skill level can enjoy.
16. Not really sure what "a game that inspires you" means but I'll say maybe... Link's Awakening? There's just something about having a world to explore that's huge but not wide open, and only a tiny, handheld monochrome screen to view it.
17. It's hard to pick just one! 2D fighting games, classic JRPGs, arcade-style racing games, and visual novel/adventure games are some of them, but I guess the tried-and-true 2D platformer is my #1.
18. Final Fantasy X. I bought it in like 2003 or so, lent it to two different friends who both played the whole thing, but I've never turned it on for even 1 second. I'm not sure why?
19. Iconoclasts is a 2D platformer with an interesting story. The look & feel remind me of Sega Genesis though I'm not exactly sure why. It also has a few bits of dialogue that are very trans-friendly. I think it was genuine and not sarcastic, at least I hope so.
20. I don't play too many scary games but when I was a kid the password music in Simon's Quest scared the heck out of me. I had to mute the TV while I was starting the game or I'd be spooked all night!
