One thing I realized after today's column was filed was that Trump's personal history is relevant: before reaching the White House, he was widely known as someone who cheated on business deals 1/ nytimes.com/2019/03/04/opi…

Now the Donald risk has become the America risk: deal with this White House, and you face a high risk of being cheated. Not good for our soft power ... 4/

What with everything else, I suspect not many people noticed that the Economic Report of the President -- the one Jabba the Hutt helped write – says that we basically have no poverty in America 1/
Here's their chart. Worth noticing that just a few years ago Paul Ryan had a report claiming that the War on Poverty should be cancelled because it completely failed to reduce poverty. 2/
Now they say the War on Poverty should be cancelled because it has been won -- their own calculations say that it was government programs that did the job. But mainly, let's focus on the absurdity and cruelty of the no-poverty claim 3/

Yes – and actually a bit worse than that. CEOs who inject themselves into policy debate have a specific kind of bias (besides the obvious class bias): they're very susceptible to "seriousity" (my riff on "truthiness"); stuff that sounds serious when it isn't 1/
The most dramatic example right now is Howard Schultz going on about the evils of debt at the very time leading macroeconomic experts have concluded, based on careful evaluation of the evidence, that debt worries are vastly overblown 2/
But Dimon had his own episode (there may have been others); he was one of the biggest proponents of the idea that high US unemployment wasn't about inadequate demand and destructive austerity, it was about a "skills gap" 3/ politico.com/magazine/story…

I thought people had gotten well past the delusion that America has the world's best health care -- let alone imagining that Scandinavian nations are socialist hellholes. But I guess I was wrong.
Actually, the thought that we had a UN Ambassador that ignorant about the world would be troubling, if it weren't so much a piece with everything else going on in Trumpist America
