We’re now switching gears to technology. The room is packed to the rafters as we hear from people with #diabetes who’ve made use of the tech available to build their own artificial pancreas, otherwise known as DIY looping. #dukpc
DIY looping lets your CGM talk to your insulin pump. We think there are around 300 loopers in the UK. And they’re getting great results: more time in target and less hypos. #dukpc
Message from the DIY loop community to healthcare professionals: we’re not going to stop doing it, so you need to be equipped to support us. #dukpc
Dr Emma Wilmot is stepping up to give the healthcare professional perspective. While they don’t initiate discussions in her clinic in Derby, they’re ready to make sure people with #diabetes who are choosing the DIY route are supported and made aware of the potential risks. #dukpc
Going forward, the number of users are only going to increase. Work is being done by key groups, including @DiabetesUK, to form a position statement that will support healthcare professionals to give the best possible care and advice to their patients. #dukpc
“Our jobs are to support, educate and empower patients and families with #diabetes, not to judge”. @mayng888 believes healthcare professionals have a duty to learn about DIY looping. #DUKPC
