Mutual hatreds are the glue that holds the Democrat coalition together, but hatred is also the explosive that threatens to blow it apart. The Party is animated by nothing BUT hatred. Every single one of its positions boils down to punishing some disfavored group.
Pick a Democrat policy, look at how Democrat politicians and opinion-makers sell that policy, and you'll see it always boils down to targeting some hated group that needs to be punished for social "crimes." There's ALWAYS an enemy, without exception.
This is a natural consequence of worshiping collective power. Bigger government means the State using more coercive force against the population and seizing more of its property. The populace must be made to see itself as criminals who deserve this punishment.
The drive to criminalize American citizenship always boils down to organizing identity blocs and teaching them to loathe the hated Other. You have to spice up the demands of socialism with a little hate sauce, or people will start thinking rationally about it and recoil.
Abortion extremism? Sold with a dash of hatred for those judgmental Bible-thumpers who can't wait to stuff women into red robes and white bonnets. Environmentalism? Hate those who would "deny science" and destroy the Earth for fun and profit!
Lefty economics is ENTIRELY about hating a phantasmal class of selfish rich people and seizing their ill-gotten loot. As Barack Obama memorably observed, the seizing - the punishing - is much more important than how much income gov't actually gets or what it does with the money.
Immigration? Oppose all efforts at border security and enforcement to demonstrate your undying hatred for the mindless bigots who enjoy throwing little brown children into cages.
The Democrat Party is nothing but hatred: fear and loathing stacked miles deep, every single policy sold to constituent groups by flattering their prejudices, whipping them into a frenzy of rage, and promising to punish their perceived oppressors.
That's why it doesn't matter when Democrat policies are obvious nonsense. It doesn't matter if the hot socialist of the moment spews utter gobbledygook about $100 trillion spending plans. As long as they promise to make the right people suffer, applause will ring in their ears.
In fact, stubborn ignorance of the details is one way Democrats signal the strength and sincerity of their hatred to their constituents. That's why you get absurd gun-control demands from people who have no idea how guns or current gun laws work. Hating the NRA is enough.
And it doesn't matter how Democrat programs actually turn out. The punishment part usually works well enough. It's highly visible and it happens up front. Constituencies nourished on hatred are so busy applauding punitive leftism that they don't notice THEY got screwed too.
"Raise the minimum wage! Sock it to those greedy fatcat business owners! YOU DIDN'T BUILD THAT! ... Wait, how come MY hours got cut and my brother got fired?"
Wonder why socialism gets so many second chances after failing to keep its promises? This is why: because it DOES keep its promises to make life worse for the hated, and that's all you need to keep a hate-based ideology rolling. /end
