OK this might upset a few people, but here goes...a very small thread on why the New Independent Group could actually be a horrific idea and may well finish off the UK as a (relatively) liberal functioning democracy.
Problem is 2fold: FPTP combined with traditional UK party culture.
Tories and Labour have always been broad churches - with highly centralised control to ensure the extremes dont get out of hand - there have been exceptions in crisis - but compared to many countries its worked
In the present crisis both traditional centres of Labour & Tories have been weakened through entryism/radicalisation. Add to this a party which attracts centre/moderates MPs to defect we have a recipie for increasing radicalisation of governing parties - not decreasing.
Now add FPTP electoral system. Tradition matters, party loyalty matters. Can we really expct #theindgroup to challenge either party for 1st place when no non regionalist party has done that in a 100years?
The likely upshot of the #theindgroup may well be the confirmation of Tories into a proto nationalist UKIPII and Labour as a hard left militant tendencyII - with centerist parties competing against each other in a sprinkling of liberal southern constituencies.
