Since I am currently angry about the lack of complex and diverse female characters in the media, and since it’s international women’s day, I’m gonna make a thread of all my favorite female-led comic/graphic novel series!! Here goes:
1. Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson @Gingerhazing Shannon Watters @shanito Grace Ellis @gracecellis and others— I absolutely ADORE this series and it’s what first got me into independent comics. The story is fun, the characters are fun, the art is fun, I just love it so much
1 cont. Noelle Stevenson might be my favorite artist, I love her style so much and in addition to lumberjanes I loved Nimona and She-Ra, and one thing that she’s amazing at is creating a group of female characters who are all fully developed in distinctly different ways
2. Paper Girls by Brian K Vaughan, Cliff Chang, and Matt Wilson @COLORnMATT — another great group of spunky preteen girls that are so much fun to time travel with!! The colors in this series are breathtaking.
3. Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick @kellysue and Valentine de Landro @val_delandro — unlike the previous comics, this series is not about a fun girl gang: Bitch Planet is about a futuristic society where rebellious women are sent to another planet (called bitch planet).
3 cont. This is a story about women who don’t fit in and the power that they have when united. Reading it will make you feel rage, it will make you feel powerful, it will make you feel as if your eye has been opened as to the way the world treats nonconforming women.
4. Motor Crush by Brenden Fletcher @brendenfletcher Cameron Stewart @cameronMstewart and Babs Tarr @babsdraws — if I told you about this sci-fi comic series about a black lesbian and you weren’t already sold, I would tell you about how compelling the story and the characters are.
4 cont. Besides all that, the colors and art style in this series are SO. MUCH. FUN. And the outfits/character designs!!!!! I just love this series so much. (Peep one of my fav posters)
5 Slam! by Pamela Ribon @pamelaribon and Veronica Fish @itsveronicafish — if you’re looking for the most lesbian thing to ever exist, here it is: a brightly colored comic about roller derby girls. Derby is all about girls being big, strong and loud. SO MUCH FUN.
6. Heavy Vinyl by Carly Usdin @carlytron — an adorable group of girls and women running a record shop, in the basement of which they train to fight crime. It’s full of just as much sisterhood, cool music, pretty color palettes, and badass lady rockstars as you could imagine.
Anyways I’ll update this thread as I find more favs but these series all have:
-entirely (or almost) female leads
-leads who are woc, fat, and/or in wlw relationships
-central themes of sisterhood
-beautiful art
-FULLY DEVELOPED FEMALE CHARACTERS WHO ARE ALL DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT
