BREXIT THREAD: Some thoughts on the new agreements and what they may or may not mean for EFTA supporters. First, here are the Docs 👇
1. We don't think these new documents substantially change anything. The language is more positive and constructive however.
2. Our critics often say that a EFTA/EEA 🇮🇸🇳🇴🇱🇮type relationship won't work because of the Irish border. The UK-EU documents of 11/03/2019 help address this.
3. As we said in this report - our plan is not for 'bare bones' EFTA/EEA but EFTA/EEA plus a bespoke Customs arrangement - *NOT* a customs union however. efta4uk.eu/wp-content/upl…
4. The 11/03/2019 text says this: ec.europa.eu/commission/sit…
5. It also says: ec.europa.eu/commission/pub…
6. In short then, these documents change little, but could be said to make an EFTA/EEA type brexit even more likely. MPs should probably largely support them but demand that Parliament has a greater say in the process from now on. /END

This is Stupidity on fecking stilts. [THREAD]
2/ if the UK drops substantively all its import tariffs, then signing new free trade agreements becomes much, much harder. @EdConwaySky
3/ when signing a new FTA, countries offer to lower import tariffs to each other (usually in return for some added concessions from the other side). If the UK has already dropped its tariffs to the world then the world has no incentives to barter with the UK.

1/ Dear Keir Starmer - the House of Commons has voted against Labour's customs union plan as we predicted. The Conservatives will never vote for a customs union after brexit.
2/ Mr Starmer @Keir_Starmer as you have recently said in Parliament, the Norway-Sweden border is smooth but not completely frictionless. But if the UK stayed in the EEA via efta it would make the border problems that much more surmountable than otherwise.
3/ that is why we have created this report which offers constructive advice on how the UK could enter a temporary customs union which would be superceded by a new bilateral customs arrangement /end efta4uk.eu/wp-content/upl…

So. Tomorrow the House of Commons will vote on a series of possible amendments to Theresa May's 'Plan B' - or rather the 'plan of action to achieve a Plan B' - which itself officially reads as follows:
The amendment most likely to pass – and therefore the one on which most attention has been paid – is this one from Conservative party chairman Sir Graham Brady. It's effectively an instruction to go back and seek *some unstated other way* to avoid a hard border in Ireland:
Tonight, Theresa May has asked her backbenchers to vote in favour of this amendment. She is basically asking them to tie her hands, so that Brussels will clearly know what it would take to win the Commons' backing for any deal.

1/ Here's the thing about the Theresa May — Jean-Claude Juncker spat over whether May was vague or not at the #EUCO summit table about her Brexit demands. It’s a sideshow because the undeniable reality is that Westminster-at-large is vague.
2/ Westminister is undeniably vague via there being no majority for any type of Brexit, yet an absolute insistence from the British government and opposition leader that nevertheless a hard-ish take back control Brexit must happen.
3/ That cul-de-sac is Theresa May's fault. Other leaders might have called Jeremy Corbyn, Nicola Strugeon, Carwyn Jones and Arlene Foster round a single table and told them they weren't leaving until a tolerable version of Brexit could be agreed or, per above, tolerated

2/ The rest of the world is left listening to Britain’s therapy session as they drone on about their ex-spouse, unable to see, admit or address their own flaws.
3/ The promise of Brexit was that it would make Britain feel big again. “Britain is special,” the Brexiteers assured British voters, who cast their ballots accordingly. But Brexit has proven that for the first time in modern history, Britain is small.

To clarify, I am remain, but I feel a 2nd ref is monumentally risky & perhaps dangerous:-

1. Polls haven't changed much, result could easily be the same
2. Another campaign of hate will embolden the far right
3. If remain win. Leavers will demand another vote
4. Chaos & unrest are likely whatever the result, possibly violence too

What happens if it's still 'Leave'? Picture the chaos, square one. You're simply allowing the Tories more time to fail to come up with a solution. Every day that continues people in this country will suffer
What if it's 'Remain'? Leavers will, with some justification, query why this vote is more valid than the first. This has the potential to cause a constitutional crisis.

People can say 'we know the facts now' all they like, that will not placate millions of angry voters.
