The brutal mosque attack today in Christchurch is heartbreaking. So many of our clients, community and staff are Muslims. Our hearts are breaking. We can’t imagine the pain and suffering. We have to be there for our Muslim brothers and sisters.
Amidst this pain what comes to mind is the #ByBoatNoVisa Australian gov policy (one of the shooters has been identified as being from Australia) that made migrants fleeing Afghanistan et al. wait on Nauru, an almost uninhabitable island, while they waited to apply for asylum.
Recently the US gov introduced a 'Remain in Mexico' policy forcing migrants from Central America to wait in Mexico while their asylum cases are processed. This policy is a very similar anti-immigrant policy put in place by Australia in 2013.
Anti-immigrant policies that right wing leaders put in place serve not just to hurt those directly impacted by terrorist attacks such as this. Their effects spread deep into our society. They stoke hate for the "other.” They lead to us hating our neighbors.
We all need to stop hating those who are different from us, to not think that someone with a different background or ethnicity is a "bad person.”
These seeds of thought have real consequences.
We owe those who lost their lives today at least that.
