@adamfleming I’ve heard you twice report today that negotiating the future trade relationship while the UK is still a member is prohibited “as a matter of EU law”. How certain of this are you and what’s the source? My understanding is a future trade agreement can’t be signed 1/3
...but it can certainly be negotiated. UK agreed to a sequential approach at the start, but was meant to proceed to future trade talks after WA was settled while still being a member (originally early 2018). It’s the WA not being ratified that delays trade talks not “EU law”. 2/3
I’m pretty certain what was initially envisaged (way back when we were all young) was that the WA and a fully drafted TA would come to Parliament simultaneously and that the political declaration was a huge fudge because we ran out of time (hence “blind Brexit” accusations). 3/3
