BREAKING: Today the Supreme Court failed to uphold one of our founding principles — no indefinite detention. #SCOTUS held that immigrants can be detained indefinitely for a crime they might have been released from years ago, w/o an opportunity for bail. 1/ usatoday.com/story/news/pol…
This means immigrants who paid their debt to society years ago are forever subject to being torn apart from their families and placed in detention without a chance to make their case to be released on bail. 2/
As Justice Breyer referenced in his dissent, this means the threat of indefinite detention can apply to immigrants who may have just been fined or subject to probation, like for using an invalid bus transfer, or illegally downloading music. 3/
Put simply, the Government should never deprive any person of liberty without due process of the law. Under this ruling, the Trump administration and ICE has been given another pass to rip apart families and communities and incite fear. 4/
As @WangCecillia pointed out, this represents the second term in a row that #SCOTUS has endorsed the most extreme interpretations of immigration law. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have been instrumental in allowing the Trump Administration to chip away at constitutional rights. 5/
@WangCecillia We want to extend our kudos to @ACLU @aaaj_alc @ACLU_NorCal & @ACLU_WA for continuing to bravely fight for immigrant communities. With them, and with partners like you, we will not stop fighting for justice for immigrant communities. 6/6
