I believe we have a social contract: go to work, do your job, and you and your family will be able to have a decent place to live, access to health care, food on the table and the ability to get your kids educated. We are seeing that social contract broken, and it is a tragedy.
Another one: as Hubert Humphrey eloquently put it: "The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped."
Thanks to mindless and cruel cuts in food stamps, work requirements for Medicaid, other cuts in the social safety net, we are failing this moral test as well.
