Let's take a closer look at recent sessional data at the #UofR.

The data, from @UofRFA, in the next few tweets are for calendar year 2018 & refer only to sessional *lecturers*, not sessional practicum coaches, supervisors, or ESL sessionals. 1/n

The chart from @UofRegina lacks numbers or the total number of sessional lecturer contracts so it is hard to gauge how many people/contracts we are discussing. 2/n
Also, @UofRegina's numbers include sessionals with 0 contracts, presumably these are sessionals who taught previously but not within 13 months of the start of their last contract. The data from URFA that I'll show now don't include these people. 3/n
For 2018, @UofRFA records 414 people as sessionals teaching at least 1 course/class for a total of 939 sessional lecturer contracts (or stipends as #UofR put it). 4/n
The breakdown of these 939 sessional lecturer contracts is shown in this plot for 2018. The majority (~56%) of sessionals do teach just a single course (222 people or contracts), which is almost 25% of all contracts. 5/n
The same data from the previous figure can be broken down by gender, into Female or Male, the only categories provided to me. 6/n
These are complex plots, but they show the proportion with n contracts or fewer. We can use it to add rough number to #UofR's chart (not exactly, see earlier).

20% of all sessional contracts go to people teaching 7 courses or more. This is 21 sessionals or ~5% of sessionals 7/n
We might wonder why there are people teaching more than a full-time equivalent of 7 courses? 8/n
There are not that many people teaching full loads (7 courses or more), just 21 people. It is not unreasonable to ask why the #UofR hasn't invested in these staff by making them full-time instructors? 9/n
One reason may be that these people teach across multiple departments or faculties. However, 19 sessionals (of those teaching 6 or more classes) do so within a single department or faculty. 10/n
If we consider hiring staff that teach 4 or more courses as research active professors, how many people would that affect? 74 sessionals. What would teaching & research look like at #UofR if we had 74 more full-time research active faculty? 11/11
