A long time ago I learnt to never compete against grace. It may sound like one of those religious things people say. But, I learnt practically that those who compete against grace compete against God.
I also learnt to "position" myself along the lines of grace. You gain more through humility than through ego. You gain more when you pause to ask what God is doing (and then align) than when you move blindly ahead.
I learnt that God is incredibly intelligent & wise and that if I consulted him, he would share his opinion about things. Another religious saying I've found to be true: "One word from God can change your circumstances."
It was my mentor who taught me to have business meetings with God. To intelligently engage him. To stop limiting God to mind numbing creatively predictable things.
The struggle for ego and pride is tiring to me. I have given up. I have failed in life and I have learnt my lessons. God is wiser than I. I would like to submit to his leadership. Bad habits die hard. Ceding control is not second nature to me.
I have learnt that God tends to have whatever relationship you want to have with him. Contrary to conventional wisdom, it seems humans are in "charge". We determine our destiny. We determine what side of God we want to see.
It would seem that humans don't "work for God" per se. In his grand design, we are meant to "work with him". It amazes me - a God that would subordinate himself to the system that he created. It's a great model for leadership - submitting your power to the system/structure.
