I’m anonymous because I’m a regular person, and the ideas I tweet aren’t about me. I don’t want to be known. I’ve never done any of this for money, or notoriety, or myself, though to be fair it feels great to be listened to for once. It feels great to mean something to people.
I’ve reconciled the reality that eventually someone would figure out who I am. For personal safety reasons, that has worried me, but I’ve always been honest about myself and professionally, I’ve always taken care to notify people about what I’m doing, not that it should matter.
I’m the feminist next door because I am in every person who listens. I’ve tried to be the voice that other people have inside them but don’t know how to use. I want to be accessible. I want to help people. I want the things I say to be normal, not revolutionary.
I sense that my anonymity is wearing thin. It scares me that being known might put me at risk, but it’s ok, I believe in what I say and it’s been a luxury to have stayed anonymous this long - to have avoided the threats other named feminists face everyday. I join them happily.
