#SinglePayer skeptics believe #MedicareForAll would be "too disruptive." But it's our *current system* that is uniquely unstable. Here is an incomplete list of the ways Americans can lose health coverage today:
If you lose your job, you can lose your health insurance.
If you decide to leave your job, you can lose your health insurance.
If your employer decides to switch plans, you can lose your health insurance.
If your insurer decides to change the terms of your plan, you can lose your health insurance.
If you move to a new state, you can lose your health insurance.
If you get a divorce, you can lose your health insurance.
If your parent or partner dies, you can lose your health insurance.
If you reach the age of 26, you can lose your health insurance.
If you develop a long-term disability or end-stage renal disease, you can lose your health insurance.
If your insurer decides to change the design of your ACA plan, you can lose your health insurance.
If you receive a modest raise and no longer qualify for an ACA subsidy, you can lose your health insurance.
If your insurer decides to withdraw from your local market entirely, you can lose your health insurance.
If your state changes its Medicaid eligibility policy, you can lose your health insurance.
If you are enrolled in Medicaid and are unable to find work, you can lose your health insurance.
If you are enrolled in Medicaid receive a modest raise, you can lose your health insurance.
If you are enrolled in Medicaid and your state contracts with a managed care plan, you can lose your health insurance.
If you are retired and your former employer declares bankruptcy, you can lose your health insurance.
If you are over 65 and your insurer decides to change the terms of your Medicare Advantage plan, you can lose your health insurance.
If your Medicare Advantage insurer decides to leave your local market, you can lose your health insurance.
If the Trump Administration succeeds in overturning the ACA, you can lose your health insurance.
In some cases, losing your health insurance means being totally without coverage. In other cases, it means losing access to your doctors. Or an increase in out-of-pocket costs that makes treatment unaffordable.
Make no mistake, coverage gaps, loss of coverage, and lack of continuity are all commonplace. Disruption is the norm, and adding one more ingredient to this unstable mix won't help matters.
Americans are demanding fundamental change: comprehensive coverage that can't be taken away no matter what life throws at you.
#SinglePayer #MedicareForAll would provide the type of stability and security that everybody needs and deserves.
