Big news on Labour whipping for indicative votes:

• Labour MPs *whipped* to vote FOR: Corbyn’s alt plan, Beckett’s public vote, and the 2 customs union amendments (Snell, Clarke)

• Corbyn will be voting FOR Common Market 2.0 and is “encouraging” Labour MPs to do the same
There's some annoyance among Common Market 2.0 backers that Corbyn isn't whipping for it (yet)

"Labour whip and Tory free votes and we would’ve done some serious damage today," one MP supporting it says
Starmer says Common Market 2.0 is not Labour's "preferred" Brexit *but*...

"We do recognise that it would deliver a close economic relationship with European Union.. It'd protect jobs... It is credible and deliverable. It should remain an option."

Labour will whip for Common Market 2.0 tonight if selected by Bercow
I reported last month that Common Market 2.0 MPs were v encouraged by how talks with Corbyn had gone and believed that he would soon whip for it. He was enthusiastic in meetings, arriving with the CM 2.0 pamphlet & lots of Qs. Decent chance it passes now.
There’s some chatter that the Lib Dems are considering voting for Common Market 2.0 tonight. “No white smoke yet,” Lib Dem source tells me. They’re definitely thinking about it...

NOTHING has a majority! 2nd ref got largest vote.
After a rollercoaster day, this is helpful for PM. Shows that there is not a majority for anything, but two of these options (customs union, second ref) got bigger support than her own deal.
It is worth noting just how far a second referendum has come in past two years. At first a fringe idea, confined to Lib Dem conference and a few other forums, it now persuades large chunks of the Labour benches and it would seem Tory benches too after tonight.

If parliament backs a customs union in the indicative votes, why shouldn’t it back May’s Withdrawal Agreement?

First, let’s be clear: the backstop is a misleading name. In the absence of any known alternative, it isn’t a fall-back but rather the default.

Given the absence of alternatives for the Irish border, and the fact that the withdrawal agreement has no mechanism for exit and allows only for a one-time extension of the standstill transition, the backstop must be assessed as the future destination (see Robbins, O.)

But for advocates of a soft Brexit—including the Labour party—why should this matter?

The problem is the lack of control—too little attention has been paid to the risks of being within a customs union without a say.

Jeremy Corbyn remains luke warm & remain-backing Tories such as @NickyMorgan01 @nickherbertmp etc are still opposed

Many Labour MPs are in favour but far from all of them
3/ What about a Permanent Customs Union? This gets closer to Labour's policy (although without the control over trade deals 🦄 bit).

Last year an amendment on a customs union was *just* defeated with some err mistakes over pairing helping the Government.

Will Corbyn fully back a UK-EU customs union (CU) covering all goods including agriculture & fisheries? EU might agree industrial goods-only CU but agriculture vital for N Ireland border & EU won’t agree any future UK-EU deal without a deal on access to waters (for fisheries)
