There’s a recurring debate about how, or even whether, academics should orient their work towards the public. I know for me, seeing academics publicly put their scholarship in conversation with the world changed my life & led me to want to attend grad school in the first place.
The current iteration of that debate often involves twitter. I think it’s a good thing for academics to find new ways to communicate their ideas to the world & twitter is now one of those ways. So I find it bizarre when people suggest that academics, or anyone, shouldn’t use it.
Twitter is far from a perfect medium, but a large part of what keeps me on here is the fact that there are brilliant ppl whose work I might not otherwise be exposed to, who I now learn from every day. It’s democratized the world of ideas, especially for underrepresented voices.
