Easy to be despondent about today's indicative votes process, and, once again, with the way in which some MPs conducted themselves. But, here's a suggestion for Monday, for how to take the process forward. @oletwinofficial 1/
It strikes me that the 8 propositions which were debated were very different in character. It may be useful, for Monday, to separate them into 3 categories. 2/
First: the substance of the deal. I assume that we are talking about the PD rather than the WA (given that the WA won't be reopened). The PD could a) be left as is; b) point more clearly towards a customs union; or c) point more clearly towards the single market. 3/
Second: the mechanism for approving the deal. That could be either a) by Parliament; or b) by a people's vote. 4/
Third: the default. What happens if the process fails, and Parliament cannot agree on a deal? The options this time are a) no deal; and b) revoke. 5/
A system could be devised to rank preferences on the substance. If Parliament endorses a 'winner', we would move to mechanisms. If Parliament cannot endorse anything, we would move to the default options. 6/
Obviously, as in relation to the whole indicative vote process, this relies on Government support. But it does strike me as a better option than what we have seen today. 7/7
Might this be a route forward? @ThangamMP @Anna_Soubry @IanBlackfordMP @Keir_Starmer
