A quick thread on 'indicative votes'; as I see them, a last-minute, desperate, attempt to find a way forward on Brexit. 1/
MPs have, days before March 29, finally won themselves some time - a day in Parliament - to find a path forward. There are a dizzying number of options suggested. 2/
MPs have to agree on a way forward, and on a way to implement that way forward (eg will a vote in Parliament suffice, or will a last-minute option also require the imprimatur of a people's vote?) 3/
They then have to persuade the Govt to adopt their plan, and make a request, before April 12, to the EU-27 for a long extension (which will involve UK participation in the EP elections). 4/
They then have to hope that the Govt makes a strong enough case for the long extension required. 5/
If it succeeds, this route offers the prospect of a solution to the Brexit impasse. But, there are (as is obvious) many points at which it could fail. 6/
If it does fail, it become easier to argue for revocation. It will have been demonstrated that there is no concrete Brexit which commands sufficient support. 7/
No deal, the WA, and various alternatives, will all have been rejected. I explain here why democratic arguments against revoke are hollow, and why the PV cannot provide a solution if there is no credible Brexit to put to the people, here. legalresearch.blogs.bris.ac.uk/2019/03/the-ca… 8/8
