1. Hey, folks, a quick reminder, apropos of nothing, that you really DON'T need to take a comprehensive survey course on an entire genre in order to a) enjoy a current bit of media in that genre, b) to consider yourself a fan of that genre of thing. Also --
2. If enjoying something new in the genre inspires you to explore the history of that genre, that's great, especially if you plan to create in the genre. But it's not REQUIRED, and you can get pleasure from/participate in the genre without it. Also --
3. If someone rolls up on you and says that you HAVE to read/watch/experience [insert their own curated list of things in the genre that are important to them] in order to enjoy/participate in the genre, remember a) they are not the genre police, b) you can ignore them. ALSO --
4. If any genre is large enough to have its own gravity in the popular culture, there will be many paths through its history, and many previous creators who will be influential -- or not! -- on the work you love and that you might create. No single path! SO --
5. Enjoy the thing you enjoy, and the genre you enjoy. If someone tries to make you feel like you're enjoying it wrong because you didn't do it the way they did, ignore them and keep doing the thing you're doing. You're fine and the way you're enjoying that thing is fine too.
